If I had 2 million dollars invested with a yearly return of 5% (easily doable), I would, in some way, have a six figure salary without having to do anything 95% of the time.
But, if I have living costs (and a little fun money) for myself covered in perpetuity… What would I even do for the rest of my life?
That’s an interesting thought since… I’d say 95% of Americans today work for 8 hours and sleep for 8 hours. That allotment to your source of income and your body’s need for rest gives us all 8 hours to do whatever we want. However, if you have the $2M invested, you’ve just bought yourself another 8 hours every day (in theory). Some people love their jobs and take pride in what they do day in and day out (doctors, child-care, educators, etc.) but I’d say the vast majority do their jobs for money.
Nobody’s really passionate about driving a truck on a highway, checking parking tickets, waiting tables, mopping floors, unclogging toilets, etc. etc. You get the point I’m making.
But I think about the heritage of my family and I realize… Passion is a privilege of the 21st century. Back in the old days, you typically had your “career” dictated… well at birth really. If you were born the son of a king the expectation is that you would rule one day, and if you were born the son of a farmer the expectation is that you would help out on the farm once you were able-bodied.
Plus, there were times where people had to forfeit their lives for their provinces, even against their will… Wars, Crusades, and Conflicts have existed since the beginning of time. For the most part, we live in a peaceful society at the current moment. We’re living in a time where we can do any thing we want, there’s no pressing demand, the economy is great, and our fellow citizens are getting fatter.
I think it’s hard to argue with a lot of what I just typed up, because we can all see this in our day-to-day lives. Since we have no set trajectory in terms of our careers, our lovers, and our lives, we are free to do whatever we desire!
Never in the history of the world has the phrase “Follow your dreams! Do what you love! Find a passion!” been more relevant until today. I think many of us (myself included) often stress and whine about how things don’t seem like they’re going our way, without realizing that having our way with all of these aspects of life is a privilege that billions of our ancestors (probably) didn’t have.
